never end up with a bad hairstylist or salon again: here’s how to find the right one

never end up with a bad hairstylist or salon again: here’s how to find the right one

the search is on for a new stylist if: 1. you moved; 2. your hairstylist is on hiatus or; 3. you’ve had one too many lousy chop jobs or color catastrophes. finding a comfortable salon environment and trustworthy stylist to connect with can be a difficult task. our hair is a very personal part of who we are so we put faith in our stylist to listen and understand our hair requests, steer us in the right direction based on their expertise, and to make us look fabulous when we walk out the door! getting your hair done regularly doesn't come with a cheap price tag either so, do the homework. here’s how to unearth the artists!

1. ask around

trust the opinions of family and friends—ask them for suggestions first. you know their style and level of pickiness, so they’ll suggest great salons and stylists to begin the search.

2. go online and get social

start by googling salons in a new town or area. read recent yelp reviews and scour salon websites and social pages for a stylist. look for years of experience or level within the salon, their specialties, and check out their work. if they’re not posting clients before and after pics, too bad, so sad. keep scrolling because you need to see their work before committing.

3. product offerings

check out the product lines they carry. do you have a favorite product line, or are you looking for products that are more natural in formulation? if they sell more hair care lines than stylists who work there, then they may not be experts in any of them. look for someone loyal and knowledgeable about the brands they represent. this shows they took the time to search out a brand they can stand behind and products they believe in.

4. book a blowout

test drive the most risk-free service on the menu. a blowout won't show their skills with a pair of shears or color brush, but it can establish a rapport and get an idea of who they are, their skill set, and what they style like. do they understand your style and what you're looking for? if you are anything less than satisfied with them or the blowout, move on to the next stylist on the list.

5. ask for a consultation

if you’ve heard good things about this stylist, thoroughly stalked their work on instagram, and received a great blowout, the final step is to book a consultation. go in and discuss hair goals. If they listen well, make professional suggestions, and come off confident in their abilities, then book that appointment! you’ve done your homework; now it’s time to let them work their magic.

finding the perfect stylist is like finding a new best friend. once you have them, treat them well, and don't let them slip through your hands. if they are genuinely talented they will be booked out for weeks or months, so be sure to pre-book the next appointment while receiving the previous haircut, color, etc. and remember, the biggest compliment to give a stylist is a referral. shout them out from the rooftops, or through social channels. ;) to top off the perfect haircut and color, start shopping our privé products.
